 <h2>Get Subversion!</h2>

 <p>Subversion packages exist for a number of different operating
     systems.  Remember, once you have it installed, most of your
     questions can be answered by reading the <a
     href="http://svnbook.red-bean.com">Subversion Book</a>.</p>


 <ul>

 <li><p>The best available version of Subversion is: <b>1.1.3</b></p>

    <ul>
      <li><p>Read the <a href="svn_1.1_releasenotes.html">1.1.x series
             Release Notes</a>, or the <a
             href="http://svn.collab.net/repos/svn/trunk/CHANGES"
             >CHANGES</a> file if you want more details.</p></li>

      <li><p>There are no "unstable" releases;  don't be fooled by
             the odd version number.  Every release is tested and
             considered stable for production use.</p></li>

      <li><p><a href="#binary-packages">Binary packages</a> are usually
             available about a week after Subversion source releases.
             If no binary packages are available for your operating
             system yet, try building from the <a
             href="getting_subversion.html">the source
             release</a>.</p></li>
     </ul>

 <li><p>The 1.0 development line is no longer active.</p>

    <p>We are no longer fixing bugs and doing 1.0.x releases.  Only the
       discovery of a horrible data-loss or security bug would prompt
       us to do another 1.0.x release.  If you discover a bug in 1.0,
       it is likely already fixed in a later development line.  If you
       report the bug, you'll probably be told to upgrade first.</p>

 <li><p>How does one upgrade to the latest release?</p>

     <p>There's nothing special to do.  Just install "on top of" an
        older release.  Any Subversion 1.X program is
        forward-compatible with newer 1.Y libraries.  No repository
        dump/load is required.  As long as a client and server both
        have the same major release number (1), an older client works
        with a newer server and a newer client works with an older
        server.  The only caveat is that if the client and server minor
        release numbers don't match (e.g 1.0 and 1.1), then not all new
        features may not be available.</p>
