Interview: Rolf Meyer, Contributor, Germanophone Language Project (Native Lang)

| |
As part of our anniversary celebration, I asked the Native Lang leads for |
| email interviews of significant contributors in their projects (including themselves). |
| Over the next few weeks, I will be posting the interviews as they come in. |
| Andre Schnabel, of the Germanophone Project, has provided this interview of |
| Rolf Meyer, contributor to the Germanophone |
| Project. The original German follows the English; I thank André Schnabel, |
| Co-Lead of Germanophone Project, for the translation.

What is that you are doing?
I got in touch with OpenOffice.org in 2002 and got more and more |
| involved in the project. I am working on marketing issues for a couple |
| of months now, having big fun. |
| I've been at two IT-fairs this year: CeBIT Hannover and LinuxTag Karlsruhe. |
| Preparation of the press releases is very important to me. I write an |
| announcement for each important OpenOffice.org-news and send it to |
| several press contacts. Giving apposite and clear messages to the public |
| without writing a novel is not an easy task. So it may happen that I |
| spend a couple of days on one single message. |
| |
| Close before the "OpenOffice.org 1.0" Birthday, the idea of a poster |
| contest was born. It took about a month to do all preparations. The |
| contest site is now online at |
| Even after the announcement of the contest, there are a lot of things to |
| do. Archive the contributions, send a confirmation mail to the |
| participants, forward the posters to Malte Kaldewey (who is hosting a |
| online gallery), update and backup the lists of sponsors and contributions. |
| |
Why are you doing this?
As with many of my hobbies or voluntary work, I enjoy the work. |
| The special thing about OpenOffice.org marketing is the challenge to do |
| advertising without having any funds. |
| |
What are the effects of your work?
(Answer by André Schnabel, co-lead Germanophone Project.) |
| Since the work of Rolf, the public visibility of OpenOffice.org has |
| noticeably increased. Several IT-tickers ask for news at the project. The |
| authors are pleased to have a personal contact with the German Language project |
| |
| members.
| |
| The marketing area at our website had to undergo a redesign due to |
| Rolf's suggestions. Now it is a good source of information and |
| materials. You will hardly find another place with so compact marketing |
| resources. His commitment at booths and for the poster contest is one reason |
| for |
| more and more companies getting in touch with the project. These are |
| companies who like to use OpenOffice.org, and also companies who offer |
| services around OpenOffice.org or like to support the project. |
| |
| |
| |
How can others help?
The project needs a lot of contributors. There are a lot of tasks in the |
| field of marketing. Helga Fischer is running a joblist and some of the |
| suggestions were made by me. Some examples of "free jobs" are: |
| Supervisor of our adults' training page, Issue reporter, Observer of |
| international marketing lists, etc. |
| |
| Whoever would like to take a job is welcome to contact me. The most important |
| would be to write an up-to-date to-do (task) list. Maybe someone is reading |
| this and willing to help: 1st look for sponsors, 2nd make screenshots, |
| 3rd design flyers, 4th work on presentations .... |
| |

| |
| |
Was genau tust Du im Projekt / mit OpenOffice.org?
| |
| |
| Geburtstag“ von OpenOffice.org 1.0 eingefallen. Es hat ungefähr einen |
| Monat gebraucht, bis alle notwendigen Vorarbeiten erledigt waren. Die |
| Internetseite zum Wettbewerb befindet sich auf |
| http://de.openoffice.org/marketing/plakatwettbewerb/. |
| |
Warum machst Du das?
| |
| |
Was hast Du mit deiner Arbeit erreicht?
| |
| Observer Marketing (international) usw. |
Sponsoren suchen, 2. Screenshots erstellen, 3. Flyer |
| basteln, 4. Präsentationen ausarbeiten, 5. ... |
