River Avon ( Hampshire ) Description : Although the river was once made navigable for 36 miles from Christchurch to Salisbury boats are no longer able to use the waterway . History : In 1535 a commission was appointed to remove weirs and obstructions from the river but no work seems to have been done . In 1664/5 an Act was passed but work did not start until 1675 and the navigation opened in 1684 . Traffic ceased about 1705 .
